I would get the student to talk as much as possible, which though sounds obvious at first, is actually quite difficult. I would use different media for the student to learn from and not just books. |

In the sessions I always encourage the student to completely forget that they speak English, and to try their hardest to speak purely in Spanish. I think this is essential because in my experience languages are best learned intuitively. Normally I ask a student to keep a notebook in which to record new vocabulary and grammatical rules that are learned in conversation. I try to first help students find some comfort in conversation, and then test the limits of their abilities to find weaknesses and gaps in knowledge, which are addressed on the spot and recorded in the students notebook. Overall, I try to avoid teaching through the memorization of grammatical rules and vocabulary sheets. |
