I am almost a complete beginner in Chinese. I did take
one very short class(4 weeks) at UCSD extension that covered
piny in, numbers, basic grammer, basic phrases and a limited
voca bulary. I am looking basic conversation skills with
my co-workers and to eventually I would like to gain
enough skill to converse in Mandarin for business. I
think I need to work on listening comprehension and
conversatio n. I live and work in the UTC area so someone
clos e by would be ideal. I would probably like one or two
meetings a week for about an hour. Price is a bit of an
issue, the $35 rate listed by some here and on craigslist
i s too hgh for me to afford twice a week.

With regards to proficiency level, I am a beginner (just dangerous enough to now a few words due to eight years of travel to the area). The reason I wish to learn, for professional as well as personal reasons, as I am confident that I will be returning to the Asia Pacific in due time. I need particular improvement in the areas of increased vocabulary, character recognition (as I studied Putungua), pronounciatio n/grammer, etc. I am willing to dedicate at a minimum 2 hours a day and I am looking for an instructor who is willing to take the time to enhance these skills. Hopefully this instructor will communicate in Mandarin in a dialect most common to the areas of Shanghai, Singapore, and even segments of Hong Kong (as I understand that Mandarin is becoming more prevelent in HK, though Cantonese still dominates in the province).
In short, I am highly trainable, well spoken in English, have advanced degrees in Psychology and Law, and work a flexible schedule.
Immediate assistance would be greatly appreciated.. .
