I'd like to learn Chinese because I'm going to Hong Kong in the fall for an exchange. My level is that of an absolute beginner, but I'd like to focus on conversation so that I will be able to get by when I'm there. I am interested in learning Korean for a few reasons. First of all, I am new to the city of Vancouver, I come from Saskatoon where there is not a lot of other cultures to interact with. When I moved here, I decided it was time to try to learn another language to expand my horizons. I took beginner spanish and I can now speak a small amount of spanish. However, I decided that Korean would be a more useful language to learn living in Vancouver. I also would like to have a career in human rights and international relations law. Therefore the more languages that I know the better off that I will be. Lastly, my boyfriend is korean. I am very interested in his culture and I am very enthusiastic about learning more about it. His family primarily speaks korean and therefore it would create a way to better communicate with them.
I have not had a lot of exposure to the language, aside from the fact that my boyfriend speaks korean on a daily basis. He has taught me a very small amount, but I figured I needed professional help to fully understand the language.
I am most concerned with basic conversation. I want to be able to understand and speak basic korean with the people around me. I would like to be able to write it, and to understand the grammar, but I feel that conversation is most important for me.
I will dedicate as much time as needed to learning korean. However I am a student during the fall and spring semesters, and I work full time during the summer, but I feel that I still have enough free time to fully immerse myself in this.
I am looking for a teacher that is understanding , I know learning a new language can be frustrating, and even more frustrating for someone who is teaching it. I also want someone who will push me as much as needed, but realize that I do have other priorities in my life as well.
