I'm learning both Kannada and Urdu for personal enrichment. I may eventually have professional use for these, but that is not my goal.
I am perhaps at an advanced beginner stage with Urdu: I have worked through a couple Hindi/Urdu textbooks. I know the basic grammatical structures of the language and have a vocabulary of around 2,000 words. I can read and write. I have very poor conversationa l abilities. Things don't yet come to me naturally, my listening skills aren't strong, and I need to keep expanding my vocabulary: The 2,000 words I know are often not the right words to say what I want to say!
I am at an early beginner stage with Kannada. I learned the language conversationa lly when I was in college 24 years ago. I was never a great Kannada-speak er, but I really loved the language. Unfortunately , I remember very little. I can write, and I have a vocabulary of only a couple hundred words. I can make some very basic sentences, but I have a lot of work ahead of me.
For Urdu, I am currently reading *Intermediate Hindi Reader* by Usha Jain, and *Readings in Urdu Literary Prose* by Gopi Chand Narang. I could use a language partner who would:
• have practice conversations with me on selected topics;
• help me understand the differences between words with similar meanings;
• help me understand passages in my readings that I have difficulty with.
To reach my goals with Urdu, I'll probably need a vocabulary four times the size of what I currently know. I'll gain this mostly for reading, but I could also use help expanding my vocabulary in targeted practical areas where I'll want to be able to speak extemporaneou sly.
For Kannada, I am working through *Conversation al Kannada* by ND Krishnamurthy and UP Upadhyaya. I could use a language partner who would:
• hav e very basic practice conversations with me on selected topics;
• help me make word lists to expand my vocabulary.

I would like to relearn the language that my family speaks in India. My proficiency level is beginner, I did speak it fluently when I was younger so I can understand a little. I am in a relationship with a guy who is from India and who's native language is Kannada. It's very important for him (and equally important for me) to be able to communicate with his family.
I'm at a very, very beginner level and I really do want to get started as soon as I can. Pronunciation and grammar is important to do right especially if you want a strong foundation.
I'm able to meet once a week but will be able to practice daily.
I am looking for a teacher with whom I can relate to, who is patient and thorough, and is excellent at teaching language. I can understand Hindi/Punjabi but can not speak it very well.
