Hi,
I've just decided to give this website a try. As I think I need to introduce myself to potential teachers, here is my story:
I'm a 32 years old professional from Montreal and I have a definite need to add Mandarin my personal array of languages to complement english and french (native french but with no real preference on language used for courses). Basically, I have been trying to learn Chinese in a very slow and relax manner for about a year and a half now and it's obvious that I only learned a fraction of what I could have learned should I have decided at the very start to opt for a more focused learning plan. I'm still oh-so-very-be ginner but I definitely feel the need to shift gear and find a spot in my tight schedule to help me learn as fast as possible.
My Taiwanese girlfriend has helped me though part of this process and has been very encouraging but I much prefer to spend quality time with her than keep bugging her with a constant flow of 'How do you say x in Chinese'. Now, I'm going to Taiwan next Christmas and I'd like to make sure that I have at least a solid base of language to work with. So even though the trip is the short term goal, being able to discuss, exchange and watch movies with her and her friends is my real reason for learning.
So to sum it up, I guess conversation is my main goal, but I feel that the language is so rich that learning to read would be a real asset in the long run. As I have a very busy schedule and work long hours once a week would probably be best, considering that a big part of a learning process is done outside class. I can work with either private lessons or with a group (I see value in both options). A teacher would have to be patient and understanding as for some reasons, my brain is quite slow to assimilate the language.

I have been in Taiwan for four years. I picked up chinese from my girlfriend who didnt speak much English. I desided to go to language school and learned how to read pin ying and tones. I am still in Taiwan and planning to come back to Ottawa but want a teacher who can continue my learning.

Hi! I lived in Taiwan and have learned Mandarin on and off for over 15 yrs. It should be better by now! I speak intermediate Mandarin but don't read or write characters. Would like a program devoting about 50% to each. I have most of the materials I need but am open to new material. Would like a focus on business mandarin (mainland) and if possible more specifically tailored to resources and finance. I'm in north Richmond Hill and willing to go anywhere in York region.
