Hi,
I just returned from China and know that Mandarin will be critical to my future success. I need someone that I can work with long term (a minimum of 8 months) to get me to the point where I can get by in Beijing and Xi'an by April, with the end goal being fluency.
As a student of Waterloo, price is an obvious concern, but I am willing to pay for the correct teacher. I think the most important thing is an intellectual teacher who can convince me that they have a genuine interest in my success, can talk intelligently about why a certain learning style or stragey is best, and can cater a lesson plan to my learning style and needs.
My basic idea is to learn spoken Mandarin first, then do some reading, mostly ignoring the writing aspect in the beginning. A lesson plan that includes Chinese television shows I can find online and magazines/ interesting web pages would be a huge plus. To accomplish this, I am willing to committ to one or two one hour lessons a week, plus do 2 to 5 hours of independent study.

I'm a Chinese Born Canadian. However, although I am Chinese, my Chinese is terrible. I would like to learn Mandarin for many reasons such as for future references and also because it is my native language.
I would like to learn Mandarin mainly for speaking and listening. However, the reading and writing would be an asset as well but not as much as communicating .
I would like maybe 1-2 hours a lesson.
