My wife and I have recently moved to Veliko Tarnovo with the intention of living and working here for the next 10 years. We have lived in Ukraine for 16 years and speak Russian fairly well. We have taken 9 weeks of Bulgarian classes in Sofia but are ready to begin private study here in VT. Our knowledge of Russian has given us a head start with Bulgarian since so much of the vocabulary is the same. We are in our 50's which makes it difficult to change - our mouths still want to speak Russian! I believe we need a private teacher to help us with conversation to begin to practice what we've learned. We would like two 2 hour sessions each week (both of us together to begin), with weekly homework assignments. At some point, we would probably choose to have our lessons separately. We would like a teacher who speaks English well enough to answer our questions clearly, but it would also be a plus if he or she knew Russian, in order to know what features of Bulgarian we already understand, and the areas that tend to confuse Russian speakers. I also want someone who will emphasize proper pronunciation .
