I would like to learn Cantonese as I am getting married in October 2010 and my in laws are first generation immigrants from Hong Kong. They speak English, but when visiting them in Markham everyone can speak Cantonese but me. I am a total beginner who needs a lot of help mostly in the area of conversation - I do not think I will ever write the language but would like to learn to speak it. I tend to lack confidence with speaking second languages and am very intimidated by Cantonese as it is so diferent from English. I would like to spend time on a weekly basis with independent study if possible - homework assignments, tests, assigments etc. would be great. If possible to learn in a classroom setting on a monthly, bi-weekly, or local weekly basis I would be interestd as well. The closer to Collingwood the more frequent I could attend. A teacher who has patience and can make learning fun, interesting and productive would be excellent.

I am trying to learn a foreign language because i always want to know what my friends tell each other and my parents think its smart to know more than one language. My proficiency level is at beginner. Areas in wich i feel i need most improvement is all of the areas. I would dedicate all my time if i have to to my language lessons. I wouldn't care if my teacher was the worst of al as long as i could have a chance to learn the language. Thank You !

I am Eurasian. my dad is greek and my mother is from Hong Kong but she was born and raised in Greece. I will move permanently in Hong Kong right after I finish my university studies and I really want to master my Cantonese, in that I am still a beginner. I lived in Hong Kong for many years until about 13 years ago. When I left Hong Kong, my Cantonese was very good - I could talk with anyone, understand TV and radio, with only a little difficulty. However, in the intervening 10 years I have not used the language, and now find that it has deteriorated badly, to the extent where I cannot understand TV programs, and have problems putting sentences together in a proper (understandab le) format.
I would like to spend a couple of hours a week immersing myself in the language, listening to broadcasts and having them explained to me, and doing some general conversation.

I would like to learn Chinese (both Mandarin and Cantonese), both because I like learning languages and because I live near areas with high Chinese populations (many of whom do not speak English well).
I am a beginner in Chinese, but have a bit of experience with Mandarin (the Rosetta Stone program), and have had two tutors so far (both of whom said I was quite impressive for an English-speak er).
My first goal is to develop a good accent (one of my pet peeves is having an English accent while speaking another language). After that, I would want to learn to read & write, and then develop conversation skills, as well as learn intricacies of grammar.
T he time I would be able to allot for my lessons would vary depending on cost, but ideally I would probably enjoy sessions 1-2 times per week, as I already have many other activities.
I would like my teacher to possess good descriptive skills, to be able to pinpoint what my flaws are (in my accent, my intonation, etc.). I'd prefer a teacher that is a bit more laid-back and doesn't maintain a rigid atmosphere, but ultimately, I'm here to learn, and skill is the most important aspect of the teacher, regardless of demeanor.
