I can read, write, and pronounce hiragana and katakana (I know only a few kanji characters) and have a basic, but limited, vocabulary which I learned in grade school (grades 1-3) and with a private tutor while living in Japan. I also attended the Japanese Concordia Language Village 2-week camp program for a few summers after returning from Japan.
There are several reasons why I desire to study Japanese. First of all, I love the language. Second, it is a part of my heritage. Third, I have always wanted to be able to hold a conversation and regret the fact that I didn't take better advantage of my opportunities to learn the language while living in Japan. Fourth, I have goals to travel to Japan for pleasure as well as explore possibilties of living there while participating in the Kodo Internship program, and in order to do so, I must have advanced proficiency.
I feel I need the most improvement in learning kanji, vocabulary, grammar, and becoming conversationa l.
I am interested in meeting with a native speaking tutor once a week who will assign work to do outside of the tutoring sessions.
