Hi my name is Jossy and I live in Richmond. I am encouraged to learn mandarin so that i can speak and do basic writing skills. I am currently studying in SFU burnaby and signing up a mandarin 100 class for the spring 2007 term. I don't have any mandarin background. However, the reason I want to learn mandarin is that I am planning to move to China possibly in the future to do business there. Therefore, I indeed need a strong background in mandarin and also learning the culture. The class is starting from January - April and I am planning to take the next mandarin class in the summer term. I am taking mandarin course in SFU to learn the basic materials before I actually need to have a session with private tutor. Perhaps, I will still need help to learn the basic and in the future for more advanced materials with private tutor.
I am not looking for any specific type of teacher. It is better if i can find a teacher whom lives in Richmond so it is efficient for him/her to come to my place or do tutoring in the library. I prefer a teacher who is familiar with chinese culture (Taiwan, or China).

I was born in Canada, so i would consider myself the typical canadian-born chinese. I have a basic understanding of Cantonese, but im looking for Mandarin lessons. Lessons in reading, writing and speaking.
Im seeking these lessons because being chinese, i believe i should be able to do more then just listen.
Th ese lessons are meant for the summer (the 2 months i have off of school), but that does not mean you should expect a half-baked job. I do plan, if the lessons go well, to continue with them.
I am looking for a tutor who has a lot of patience with a student who has Zero understanding of Mandarin. I would also like to improve my Cantonese during these lessons (if possible...)

Hi,
i'm a beginner wishing to learn to speak, read and write Mandarin. i will be going to China soon and would like to learn as much as possible in introductory conversation with perhaps a few Chinese characters as well, although it would probably be best to concentrate on conversation.
i would also like to learn to sing at least one Chinese song in Mandarin for Karaoke. If this is possble in a short time, this would be a bonus.
i can speak a little Cantonese already and have learned several traditional Chinese characters but i would like to tailor my learning for China, especially Beijing.

My son will go to Hong Kong to study and I want to study with him so we can converse together in Mandarin.

I knew some basic Mandarin phrases about a year ago, I am a beginner in the language. I want to be able to be able to have intermediate and possibly advanced conversations in Mandarin in the future.
I think this would benefit me in the future as a business person, although currently I am just a student. I am willing to dedicate quite a lot of time to the lessons as long as I am seeing good results (multiple hours a week).
The qualities I am looking for in a teacher is someone that is patient, a good teacher, and has good english skills as well.
