I have had two years of college level Mandarin at Northern Virginia Community College and George Mason University. I spent four weeks at Beijing Normal University in intensive training in 2005. I have visited China (mostly Yunnan province) four times in the past five years.
How ever, I became seriously ill after returning from China and have not been able to practice Chinese for more than a year. I am now healthy again and eager to resume studying Chinese. I seem to have forgotten a great deal!
My main interest is in one-one tutoring in conversationa l Mandarin. I will also resume classes in Chinese at GMU. I am retired so my schedule is very flexible. I could meet 1-3 times a week.

I have no prior knowledge of Portuguese. I do, however, have a high level of fluency in Spanish. I am learning Portuguese for a 6 month stay I will have in Brazil, starting in September 2006. I want to focus particularly on grammar, as well as vocabularly and conversation practice. I'd like to meet with a language tutor about once a week. I would prefer to have a native speaker, and it would be great it if it's also someone who is fluent in Spanish. As I learn Portuguese I will most likely be referring back to Spanish, so it would be great for someone to explain Portuguese grammar in the context of Spanish grammar, which I can imagine has its similarities and is something I understand.

I'm a high school senior in Northern Virginia and I am interested in beginning Mandarin. I have many friends who speak Mandarin, and they really have gotten me interested in learning the language. Because I go to a specialized magnet high school, my time is somewhat limited and my schedule somewhat rigid, but I am looking to continue studies through the summer.
