Regretfully, I have never learned to speak Italian, even though my parents are from Italy and the vast majority of my family lives in Italy. I want to learn conversationa l and written Italian so I can communicate with my relatives overseas (via email and when I visit them next year). I understand some Italian when it is spoken very slowly. I can speak a little Italian, but it is very broken. In addition, I have professional friends with Italian roots who also want to learn with me. Consider us all as beginners...w e want to learn from the beginning. Our request is for the face-to-face tutoring of 3-5 adults in a private-group setting. We are each able to dedicate about 2-3 hours per week learning the language. The qualities we are looking for in a teacher are PATIENCE and GOOD HUMOR. Those two qualities are very important to all of us. Thank you.

My situation is a bit unique because I learned some Italian as an infant. My parents were born in the south of Italy, and spoke it at home at the time of my birth. Because of this, I did learn a number of 'bad habits' and certain dialect influences took root.
At this point, I want to devote the next twelve to eighteen months to leanring to read and write, and erasing old habits. My goal is to be able to pick up any Italian newspaper and understand the stories. Another goal is to live and work in Italy, so my language skill need vast improvement. I am able to devote apprximately four to six hours of study time (exclusive of tutoring) to learning. I am serious about my goals, and 'shopping' for the appropriate teacher who will be professional, determined, and creative. I live in the South Loop neighborhood of Chicago, and practicality of location is important, as well as a fair and reasonable price.
