I am a complete beginner. I know nothing about the language! Though my mother speaks Mandarin, I was raised speaking only English (and later in life learned French).
I 'd like to learn Mandarin because I would like to be able to travel to China. A friend and I have made tentative plans to go there to work, and learning Mandarin is a great first step.
I'd be prepared to meet a couple of times a week (nights only!) to learn.
I consider myself a fast learner, and I'm willing to put in a lot of effort to learn. So I would prefer a teacher who places more emphasis on this learning aspect, rather than an easy, relaxed, social aspect. Not that I'd want my teacher to be a slavedriver or anything...bu t I think it's important to note that I wouldn't be doing this as a social activity. I'd be here to learn.

My husband and I are beginners when it comes to learning Mandarin. My husband knows a few basic phrases as he has traveled there on 2 different occations. We are wanting to learn Mandarin in hopes of one day traveling/liv ing there for an extended period of time. We would like to have a tutor for a least 1 session a week.

I am currently studying for an Asian Studies degree through Open Learning Australia and I have successfully completed four (4) Standard Chinese (Mandarin)sub jects. Although I was able to do this I feel that my proficiency level is only at a beginners stage as I have not had the opportunity to have any direct conversation with anybody.
I wish to learn another language (Chinese) as it will enhance my work options within my career.
I wish to start with only one lesson per week in a private capacity.
I am looking for a teacher that will be able to not only teach me conversation but will provide cultural awareness as well.
