ABOUT ME:
I lived in Ukraine for 2 years. I studied Russian with Peace Corps, but have not used much Russian in the past year. Most of the Russian I use is on the Internet, so now I read it more than speak it.
PROFIC IENCY LEVEL/ABILITI ES:
I am an intermediate Russian speaker. I have good communication skills in Russian, but I have big gaps in my technical performance (GRAMMAR!). I can touch type in Russian and I can read and write cursive.
WHY I WANT TO LEARN:
For university and to maintain friendships. Later, I would like to study Russian at a university, so I want to have the basics mastered. Right now I do not feel I could keep up a university class because of the gaps in my grammar. I have friends in Ukraine who I can talk to or write to. I am not interested in writing essays, but I am definitely interested in writing letters to friends!
I am interested in perfecting what I know rather than just adding so many new vocabulary words. Of course adding vocabulary can be important, but I would like to concentrate more on speaking well than just adding new words. Because I haven't used much Russian in the past year, I'm more interested in being able to use the words I have learned but may have forgotten.
I would love to spend concentrated time on each case. For example, using the dative case for a full month or until mastered, whichever comes first. By focusing on one single case and getting so much practice with it, it should become simple.
RE SOURCES
I have access to Russian tv shows and movies. I also love Russian pop/hip-hop music, especially По ;та ;п. I have found that music is very inspiring, and by memorizing songs I can remember phrases and vocabulary much better. I like (and have) Russian audio books, and the series: 33 не ;сч ;ас ;ть ;я and also the book ав ;ос ;то ;по ;м по ; га ;ла ;кт ;ик ;е.
Q UALITIES IN A TEACHER
I look for a teacher who is well prepared and has many ideas. I appreciate an enjoyable class with good practice time. I want someone who pays attention to my language and is able to tailor lessons to my needs. For example, if the tutor notices I am having some trouble with the future tense, the next session could include situations where I would have to use that many times. I want the focus to be on improving and mastering, and I have had tutors who didn't want to 'bore' me or wanted to focus so much on the material that they didn't care if I had actually learned the materials! Hopefully the tutor does needs assessments, understands how I want to use the language and will select vocabulary and exercises based on those needs.
I would love to meet for about 1-2 hours per week.
I have a background in teaching--I have done teacher trainings for 3 years. I appreciate the communicative method. I love having fun in my lessons.

Hi,
I am considering learning Russian because of a girl. But also because I am soon to be divorced, have a physically based job, and need something to put my mind to and focus on.
At this stage I would be interested in only one hour long session per week due to financial constraints. However, my current job leaves me with plenty of time to practice.
I am not sure of any specific qualities I am looking for in a teacher. I take people as they are, and if we work well together then the learning progress will of course be smoother. But someone with patience would most likely be beneficial.
