Hello - my daughter turns 7 this month and has been taking group Mandarin lessons since age 4. She is currently enrolled in Grade 1 Mandarin with the York Region Catholic School Board on Saturday mornings. We do not speak Mandarin at home so: (1) she doesn't get practice speaking; and (2) we find it very difficult to help her with homework, especially when the homework instructions are in Chinese characters only. Rather than give up in frustration, we would like to consider private lessons. Our ideal tutor is firm but friendly, and knows how to cater to a non-Mandarin speaking child. Our ideal time for lessons would be Saturday morning for 1 - 1.5 hr. I realize this may be difficult as Saturday morning is a popular time for tutors who work for the school boards. Failing Saturday morning, we could consider other time slots.

I have an general interest learning languages. I am fluent in english. I can get by with my Cantonese, Taishanese and Spanish, but I am a complete beginner when it comes to Mandarin. My main goal right now is to learn how to read mandarin pinyin. I hope to reach this goal by committing 4 hours a week. I prefer a teacher that is capable of teaching me the basics by effectively communicating to me what i am doing wrong and what I can do do improve.
