I am just above beginner level. I can read slowly, and can speak a little. I want to learn because I want to spend more time here, I love the country and people, and feel it's best to be able to at least communicate a bit in Hindi. I especially want to be able to speak better, to have a conversation, and to understand spoken Hindi better. I would like to learn for an hour a day, and do homework for one-two hours a day. Qualities I'm looking for: above all patience, plus, good teaching skills, sense of humour, preferably native speaker who speaks at least one additional language, not necessarily English, but just so he or she has had the experience of learning another language.

I am a 45 year old New Yorker with english as my only language. I have been married to an Indian woman from South Delhi for many years. We have 3 children and travel at least once a year to India. My in-laws often have extended stays in our home. Nearly everyone in my wife's immediate and extended family speaks english very well.
I also am a lawyer with many Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi,and Bangla speaking clients. I am embarassed that I don't speak Hindi better then I do and I am upset that my children have no fluency in the language.
I have no interest in written Hindi I only want to be able to speak the language in a way that makes me understood and allows me the freedom to speak competently and confidently.
At the moment I can speak pleasantries and follow very basic conversation. My vocabulary is small and I find that I rely on the english spoken by middle class indians, when they speak in hindi, to help me get by. I am interested in possibly having a teacher work with my children ages 14, 4 and 3 as well. Thank you.
