Hello, my name is Abigail Flores!
I' m currently a student at the University of Florida, located in Gainesville, Florida. I'm currently looking for a teacher in either Filipino (Tagalog) or Mandarin Chinese.
My reasons for seeking a language teacher are two-fold.
First, I am proud of my cultural heritage. Born and raised in the United States, I learned what I know of the Filipino culture from my parents. My mom has made brief mentions of Chinese heritage as well.. However, I feel disconnected whenever my parents engage in speaking in Tagalog. I want to actively embrace my culture by learning its language: Tagalog and Mandarin Chinese. It's my only way of talking to my grandparents, cousins and family friends. Plus, I also want to be able to pass this gft of languages to my kids, if I ever do have them.
Second, I am quite interested in languages themselves and the countries. I plan to hopefully visit both Philippines and China after I have completed my schooling.
I am a novice in both languages, having a minimum of a five word vocabulary. My parents had attempted to teach me Tagalog when I was younger but has since ceased. I have small exposure to Chinese.
I am willing to spend 2hours a week minimum during the school semester, and hopefully more hours during the summer (if you happen to available then as well).
Wha t I expect from my language teacher is what my language teacher can expect from me: someone who is hard-working and passionate about Tagalog and/or Mandarin Chinese. I learn better from live interaction either in one-on-one if not small group session. I hope to engage this teacher in lessons and conversations . I am looking for a knowledgeable teacher in one or both of languages I have ascribed, who is both creative and patient. Especially patient.

I want to learn Sign language first because I have a love for it that started as a child. Secondly, I want to help the deaf community as a advocate and mediator in the hearing world. Career advancement is a plus especially because I want to work in a deaf school for the rest of my life.
I have taken some ASL courses in the past. ASL 1,2,3 and Deaf Community and Culture. I practice now through books and watching videos. I will be taking college courses again this fall 2012. I need tutoring for gramnmar, conversation, everything.
The biggest and most helpful quality in a teacher is PATIENCE. Im a beginner. Genuinely Friendly, down to earth sort of person. They must have a love for ASL, the Deaf Community and teaching.
