My wife is French and we live here in New Zealand. I can fumble my way through a one on one conversation in French, but my verbs are poor. My french has developed through a handful of 2 month trips we've done to France. It's entirely phonetic, so I have no ability to read or write in French at all. I really need to get fluent so that my wife and I can immerse our children in French at home, so that they can have a good handle on both French and English. I'm highly motivated and committed. I've tried a couple computer programs but I don't do well with learning on my own. I'll do much better with a teacher who can guide me and track my progress.
Realistic ally, I can't afford to do more than around an hour or 2 per week for focused lesson times... but I can spend lots of time throughout the week practicing what I'm learning with my wife and kids. Especially in the evenings and on the weekends.
I'd prefer a native French speaker, because my wife [being French] is adamant that I get my prononciation perfect. But at this stage I'd pretty much jump in with anyone who's willing to commit to teaching me! One on one, in person lessons here in Tauranga would be ideal... but I'm also comfortable doing something online.
