I consider myself to be an intermediate english student, I am aware that learning a language is something that you could devote your entire life to and not have enough time to master it; still, I insist on giving it a try.
I can read the NY Times without looking at the dictionary (well, some writers are just trying to show off, other than that I have no problems)
I can listen to, and understand, pretty much everything in a normal american conversation; of course, if they're talking technical outside of my field I will have a hard time, but anything from Howard Stern to some of the Stanford lectures are OK to me. Yes, I know you think I am talking out of my 'neck', but other than a few vocabulary words or idioms I have no problem understanding Americans talk; British, Australian or worse, Irish, are another story, though.
I must talk about my Speaking abilities now, and well, I don't think I'm good enough. I am aware that I have an accent, and I am very self-consciou s about it. Of course it could be better, a whole lot better.
And lastly my Writing, which if it was a muscle it would not lift air.
I am in urgent need of a tutor, I am going to New York next Thursday and need to take my English out of the basement for a walk, see the sun, get the blood flowing; the poor thing was ostracized by the imposing Portugueses of the world.
But most importantly, I am finishing a short film and need some assistance with the translations, it's a comedy, and that's a good segway into the next topic:
A tutor who is not an uptight grammar-nazi wearing bowtie, neither a ghetto gangster wearing bling, some regular person with a sense of humor, that's what I'm looking for.
And a tutor who can be honest, I don't need someone to brush my ego, I want someone who will help me take my English to the next level.
I have a preference for tutors from NY, California or London, but I love you all.

I am an American who will be staying in Alphaville from October 1 to November 17 tentatively. I would like to take this opportunity to learn Portuguese for my own personal development, and to make the most of my time here in Brazil. I am a beginner who is completely new to Portuguese. Hello. My name is Robyn. I will be arriving in Brasilia on August 30th to do a 7 month work placement. I have no knowledge of Portuguese and need to learn the language fast in order to do my work. I do have a strong level of spanish, and feel this will help me learn the language quickly. Ideally I would like to take intensive private lessons (3 hours each day) for the first 3-4 weeks (for the month of September, 2006) I am looking for a private tutor.
