Wish to improve my understanding of Chinese culture and literature.
I have some understanding of Mandarin and classic Chinese literature and can read and write some hanzi. I have read the works of Li Bai, du Fu, Laozi and Cao Xueqin. I can speak some Cantonese and Mandarin but my weakness is in tones.
I have free time in afternoons, Glasgow is within easy reach also I have broadband internet access.. I am not retired and also need to learn Cantonese for business purposes. I need to learn cantonese as i will be living in Canton as of May 2011. I am a beginner and MUST be able to read/write Cantonese. I am able to take lessons for 1-2 hours/week. I have tried to learn Cantonese off a disc/book but I have trouble with memory retention in learning other languages, I am looking for a teacher who will help me work around this and is able to teach me Cantonese in a short amount of time. I would like to start with Cantonese, learning the language to better communticate with friends, and locals. I have got very little of the basics down, the simple how are you? please, thank-you etc the very essential basics but not nearly enough to have a conversation. Understanding is easier then speaking so my pronouncation is way off.
I would like to get a better grip on the language barrier between me and everyone I know around here.
I think finding a formal teacher to do one on one lessons would get me much further, much quicker then just trying to pick up the language when its spoken around me.
Right now I'm just looking at different resources available and having someone come to my home for private lessons I think would be most benificial.
