English translations of「平床」in an automotive context
Hello there,
in a list of Daihatsu Hijet vehicle types that were manufactured starting in January 1996 [平成8年1月] that includes both pickup trucks [ピック] and vans [バン], I found the description「平床」used to describe their body shapes [ポデー形状]. For pickup trucks, the translation “flatbed” makes sense in English, e.g.「平床三方開」as “flatbed three-way opening”. For vans, however, the translation “flatbed” doesn’t necessarily make sense in English, e.g.「平床、ハイルーフ」as “flatbed, high roof”. These vans were manufactured with a seating capacity of either two or four people; the translation “flatbed” might make sense in referring to the enclosed cargo area of a van with a seating capacity of two people, but given the small size of the Hijet van, it might not make sense for the enclosed cargo area of a van with a seating capacity of four people. (Given the codes describing each vehicle type, the listed vans did not include “deck van” [デッキバン] body shapes, which have a small unenclosed pickup-style cargo area.)
In Japanese, does「平床」always mean “flatbed” in the context of a vehicle’s body shape? For example, if the rear seats of a van could be folded down such that when folded, the seats would be level with the floor of the enclosed cargo area, would “flat floor” be a more accurate translation of「平床」than “flatbed”? Or would「平床」always mean “flatbed” in this context?
Thank you for your input!
