I had gone to Thai last summer.IF you want to experience culture,you'd better go to Chiang Mai,there are lots of temples and Thai culture are very rich.But if you want to hiking or something,I advised Patiya.Personally,I like there very much.Sunshine,sea,beach and anything else you want.But be carefull,safety isnot very well.
