what exactly does the word Gringo refer to???
i have heard it used for just germans and for all europeans which is it?

I don't know about europe- but in the US, 'gringo' is a commonly used refrence that people of the Hispanic race use to define whites.

Gringo is a slang term used by Hispanics in the United States and Mexico to describe white people. Some people take it as a joke and other people get offended by it.

But then why is Gabriel Heinze, a German, called Gringo Heinze in argentina , when most all of Argentina is white europeans?

In Argentina we're very mixed. We don't call 'gringo' to white people, we call 'gringo' to german blonde men, in very specific areas of our country. (fem. 'gringa') My dad's family comes from German, and most of them are very very blondes, and they are often called 'gringos'. But is not offensive.

Gringo means " Green go", talking about the amercian uniforms of the soldiers in XIX. That was the scream of the mexican people when they see´em.
