Food is the actual thing you eat, a form of nourishment, like bananas, chicken, apples that kind of thing.
A meal would be like supper, lunch, breakfast.. the regular time to eat food or the food you would eat at that time.
I guess in general, during a meal you'll eat food.

i agree anything that is eaten for nourishment and is not poisonous is food.a meal may comprise of many kinds of food items.say for examplein the US a typical meal would be : hamburger, fries, and coke.In russia a typical meal would be
Potato (boiled, fried, baked, potato chops, potato pancakes, potato soup, smashed potato)
Bread (bread, toasts, bread-crumbs)
Eggs (boiled, fried)
Meat (pork and beef – chops, stakes)
Butter (usually added in all meals and spread on bread)
Food refers to the individual items.meal is when you group many food items and eat them for lunch, dinner, breakfast or supper. hope this helps
