Help with German color grammar
I've learned rot, schwarz, weiß, rosa, lila, grau, orange, grün and gelb from my Rosetta Stone software.

As well as rote, roten, gelbes, grünes and other variations.
I understand that these variations come in if the color is said before a noun.
What I'm not sure on, is how to know which word to use in the sentence. Is it based on the gender of the noun or some other factor?

Re:Help with German color grammar
Hello!
Well, for example:
Das rote Haus but die roten Häuser.
Ein gelbes Auto but das gelbe Auto but die gelben Autos.
ein grünes Halstuch but das grüne Halstuch but die grünen Halstücher.
So, you see, die roten, grünen usually used when it's plural. ein gelbes, grünes when it's an "unbestimmter" male Article before the colour. der, die das rote, grüne,..then when it's an "bestimmter" article or an "unbestimmter" female article before the colour.
hope, that helps a bit.

Oh wow, it's so complicated.
Some examples would be great!

I'm confused about the introduction of versions such as grüneS and gelbeS from my language program, though. When would I use those?

Re:Re:Re:Help with German color grammar
Gut. Aber "Der schwarze Hund."

The color is an adjective and its form depends on the related nouns Numerus (Anzahl), Genus(Geschlecht) and Kasus(Fall).

In addition to this you need to have a look at the article. There is a difference between unbestimmt und bestimmt.

You use "bestimmte Artikel" if it is know which dog is meant.
Like you mentioned him before, or he is standing right in front of you

You use "unbestimmte Artikel" if it is not known which dog is meant.
Like you can see him, but he left some poop on your porch so he was there sometime...

Der schwarze Hund.
Der Hund ist schwarz.

Ein schwarzer Hund.
Ein Hund ist schwarz.

Die schwarze Katze.
Die Katze ist schwarz.

Eine schwarze Katze.
Eine Katze ist schwarz.
