Hi from a new member in England.
I live in Bristol, England and I am devoted to Berlin, Germany. I know how easy it is to function there without speaking German but I find that unsatisfactory and disrespectful. It is also far from convenient. I was 'taught' French in school and given the impression I was hopeless at languages. However, I was always attracted to German and find I seem to acquire it easily when I am there. My few phrases are limited and my pronounciation awful, but Germans seem to appreciate my attempting to speak their language instead of addressing them in English. I find this very rewarding.
I am in the midst of a BSc degree and have not the time to take formal lessons in German but more importantly my experience of five years of formal French lessons, which rendered me incapable learning that language, warns me against repeating that experience with German. I would like, however, the chance to acquire the language informally (naturally) through its actual use. Perhaps badly but intelligibly and, particularly, to be able to comprehend when addressed. With that in mind any contact with German speakers would be appreciated.
I am adept at formal English in written communication, have written three volumes of non-fiction (of which two are in circulation), have been a weekly magazine columnist and write formally in the context of my science studies. However, I have a 'street level' personal style with an extensive ability to utilise various colloquial patterns. My vocabulary and language-related background is therefore extensive (spanning the arts and science) and deep and I was also for several years a teacher of English as a Second Language. Anyone wishing to develop their English can learn a lot from me.

Re:Hi from a new member in England.
Hi Alex, I'm interested in improving my English and can offer you my German. I'm German and live in Bielefeld, I grew up in Berlin. I studied psychology and am now working for a German appliance manufacturer. Let me know if you are interested in a language exchange. Cheers, Nadine
