Hey there, everybody!!!
I love movies!!! They are so quotable- but I wonder what it is like to watch a movie in translation (having seen it first in one language, then in another) The only experience I have had with this leads me to believe that Humor is very difficult to portray in different languages. What is funny in one language just sounds weird in another. For example, I recently watched Toy Story in spanish, and the quote "Por infinito, y mas alla" simply didn't seem to carry the same impact as to infinity and beyond. Any comments, anyone?
What do you guys think?

Seeing dubbed movies always leave a bad impression....It will never be as good as the original version.

Re: humor in foreign films
I definitely see what you are saying .. On the other hand, there are some kinds of humor that carry well across languages. If you have not seen "Johnny Stecchino" (Italian) or "Shall We Dance?" (Japanese, I think), they come highly recommended!

Hi;
I love orginnal versions too.The great diference when translate a film is in the tittle, sometimes it´s sounds ridicolous. I´ve seen Toy Story too, and he said "hasta el infinito y más allá" I don´t know what he said in English but in Spanish it sounds funny.

I completely agree with you,to see films in original language is always better than seeing films in translation.Neverthless,there are also good translation around.I think that "Por el infinito y mas allà" is a quite good trial,even if "To the infinity and beyond" is obviously more touching.

This statement is definitely true. Sometimes when you translate something in another language it sounds even funnier. This has happened to me.
