The best way to start-
I think the best way to start if for each sender to write short messages in their own first language.

The receiver tries to understand it- and replies in his own 1st language
which the sender now has to try to understand, before responding in his own first language.

After a while both partners will feel confident in writing in their new language.
THIS IS HOW mixed Frencg/English teams managed to work together to build the Concorde aeroplane- every team had both nationalities in it and al were taught FIRST to understand the 'foreign' language.

Best of all is for both partners to meet in a public place with refreshments- cafe or bar, just relax, don't worry about mistakes and enjoy the conversation. Prepare some stuf from Google translate before the meeting, and amaze your partner how much you have improved. It's NOT cheating!

La cosa migliore è che entrambi i partner si incontrino in un luogo pubblico con rinfreschi, caffè o bar, rilassati, non preoccuparti degli errori e goditi la conversazione.
