It depends on what you are counting. The plain, originally Chinese numeral is "hachi".
You can also use the domestic "yattsu" ("ya" plus generic ending "tsu"), if you do not specify the type of countables.
If you specify the type of countables, use "hachi" plus the right suffix for the countable. For example "hachidai" for vehicles and machines, "hachinin" for people, and so on.
Native Japanese could give you more detailed explanation about the applicability of "yattsu". To me Japanese is a foreign language.
There are other East Asian languages who have the same kind of complexity with the numerals.
