A new world begins today
So how are you all reacting to the news of Pope Benedict the XVI? What do you think? What do you thing it will mean? Do you think that the world will be different with him in the Vatican than it was with Pope John Paul II?

Re:A new world begins today
I think it is cool that he is a german Pope. I think there may be a lot of changes. I heard a rumor about his beleifs about other religons, and it sort of worried me, but I don't want to aid in spreading it because there is no way to know if it is true or not until we get to know him better. Overall I think he will be a good Pope, but no one can fill Pope John Paul II's shoes.

Re:A new world begins today
I think he’ll be working along the same lines as John Paul II. This is logical taking into account that he was the most important advisor of the former Pope. He’s said he’ll carry on with the teachings in Vatican II, so I don’t think there’ll be much change within the church, pity, personally I’d have liked a few changes! I guess he’s determined to do his best to go on with JPII’s foreign policy and mediation, and I don’t know if the world will be different with him as Pope, may be this will depend on his personality and strength to cope with the demands of a globalized society. Now, what’s the view non-catholics get of the figure of the Pope?

Re:A new world begins today
It is strange how opinions can change from one side to another about Benedict XVI.
Thus Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, who is the dean of the college of Cardinals at his 78, is described as a conservative cleric. As the person in charge of the Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith he cracked down on religious pluralism stances, challenges to traditional teachings on issues such as homosexuality, and calls to ordain women as priests. He rejected the Church's involvement in issues like human rights and social justice, objecting to the mixing of churche theology with Marxist ideas like class struggle. He caused a major diplomatic stir with a condemnation of communism and of Muslim Turkey's admission to the European Union. He declared that Catholicism was the only true religion, questioning the validity of other religions. That is why he warned against relativism in the Church. On the other hand some of his former students describe him as a shy and gentle person. He is regarded as an intellectual and considered humble and charming personally. Moreover he speaks five languages: German, French, Italian, English and Spanish. However, he was elected after only four or five ballots, thus there was an overwhelming consensus among cardinals. He was a leading candidate. His election is not going to be a terrible earthquake since his stances are known due to both many books he published which were bestsellers and the extensive interviews he gave around the world. Moreover, he served as John Paul II's chief theological adviser that is to say he will run the Church's business like his predecessor. Nevertheless, the two men are different. John Paul II worked directly in pastoral settings and had a great love for outdoors. He had a remarkable connection with youth, loved to travel... These things are not immediately associate with Benedict XVI who is overwhelmingly an intellectual person. To conclude, we will have to wait before judging the new Pope. I can all the less deem him since I have only known John Paul II as a Pope...
