Well, this tomaaaaato is international, but not quite so international... Native Americans named it, since it grew first in South America. Well...there's ντομάτα - Greek ţamāţim in Arabic tomaat - Dutch (Thanx to Siegfried) une tomate - French eine Tomate - German トマト - (to-ma-to) - Japanese t'o-ma-t'o - Korean tomate - Portuguese domates - Turkish томáт , помидор (pomidor) - Russian tamaandho - Somali tomate - Spanish (anonymous confirmed this) tomat - Swedish And then there are the totally different names: Some like to call it a 'golden apple'. pomodoro - Italian pomidor - Polish помидор (томáт) - Russian Now how did they ever come up with the following tomato words??? rajčice in Croatian tungule in Swahili kamatis in Tagalog (sounds a bit like tomato k for t in -amat) gohje farangi (French plum) - Farsi cà chua/quả cà chua - Vietnamese (Thanx to Van Ha Le) And here's a challenge-- what could 'tomato juice' be? Jus de tomate - French Tomatensaft - German succo di pomodoro-Italian (Thanks Simona) maji ya tungule - Swahili nước cà chua / nước cà chua ép - Vietnamese (Thanx to Van Ha Le) Just say V-8. It's like tomato juice. Oh...it's your turn now to inform us about tomato names! GG
