I've learned most of the alphabet, just not all at once. Every time I look at a word, I can identify each character but it's a slow & mentally painful process.
I'm going over long and short vowels recently, and while that's easy I don't remember what counts as long or short. I don't think of these things as I'm speaking English.
I start class in a couple of months and have no syllabus or course work to follow. I'm not doing much before then and I'd like whatever help you could give before then. But I do know I'll be taught a formal Persian that no one actually speaks.

I have a sister who lives in Thailand and a Thai girlfriend who speaks english. I need to learn the language so I can talk to people I meet while in Thailand as I visit 1 to 2 times per year. I only know two words in Thai and it's time to get serious and learn the language.

My husband and I are learning Serbo-Croatia n in anticipation of moving to Montenegro next Summer. He is in a full time language training program but there was not room for me in the class. I know the Serbian cyrillic alphabet and how the letters sound but that's about it. I'm a beginner! I would be interested in hearing from you how much time per week you feel would be necessary for me to be somewhat proficient in reading, writing and speaking Serbo-Croatia n by July 2014.
